You can get tankless hot water systems in both electric and gas/propane. So there is a choice if your house does not have wiring for 220V, then you have propane or gas option which is cheaper and more efficient anyway than electric systems.
The solar hot water system can be used in conjunction with a tankless system but you still need a large tank to hold the pre-heated hot water on most all solar hot water systems.

I had a small reem hot water heater for under the sink that lasted four years. This one was simpler to put in and heats water sooner and takes up less room (both had been 2 half gal). It stays cooler below the sink (it is enclosed) than the reem.

I hooked this up in the kitchen sink to keep away from a 30 foot run from the main HWH. It took about 1 hour beneath the sink and another 30 minutes putting in another power outlet. The heater works great. The 2.5 gallon provide is lots to deal with dishes and hand washes. I disconnected the primary provide and haven't missed it.

Earlier than this small water heater was put in under my bathroom sink, I needed to run 2 gallons to get hot water. Now I have scorching water instantly...and the worth at Amazon was cheaper than anywhere else.
